A man was killed by the police early Monday morning after he allegedly initiated a shoot-out in Tondo, Manila. The fatality, who was driving a motorbike, remained unidentified at press time and was described to be between 35 and 40 years old. A Manila Police District (MPD) report said he was found carrying three sachets of “shabu” and wielded a.38-caliber pistol. MPD-Tondo station commander Supt. Arnold Thomas Ibay said a patrol team posted at the corner of Antonio Rivera and Bambang Streets tried to stop the man around 1:20 a.m. upon seeing he was using a motorbike without a license plate. Instead of pulling over, Ibay said, the man suddenly drew his gun and fired at the policemen, prompting them to return fire. The man sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the body and was declared dead on arrival at Jose Abad Santos General Hospital. Jovic Yee

Mandaluyong man collecting P2K debt hacked to death

A Mandaluyong City resident was hacked to death on Black Saturday reportedly over a P2,000 debt he was trying to collect. A report to the Eastern Police District said 37-year-old Johndel Plaza of Barangay San Jose died after John Kiel Jamero, 19, from Barangay Plainview and a certain Tonton attacked him, with one of them striking the victim with a katana or Japanese sword. The assault happened around 7:15 p.m. on Block 36, Welfareville Compound in Barangay Addition Hills. Jamero was later arrested while Tonton remained at large as of Monday. According to the case investigator, PO3 Dingdong Dominguez, Jamero said Plaza, the owner of the katana, brought the weapon with him when he went to see Jamero about the P2,000 the latter owed. Jamero claimed Plaza started the fight and that he and Tonton only retaliated, using Plaza’s own sword against him. Jamera, who was also wounded in the head and hands, was arrested after receiving treatment at Mandaluyong City Medical Center, the same hospital where Plaza was pronounced dead. The victim’s family on Monday was set to file murder charges against the two suspects. Jodee A. Agoncillo

Blocking brod’s arrest, QC man killed by police

A man who tried to prevent the arrest of his younger brother was shot and killed by the police in Quezon City on Sunday night. The police said Vivencio Serabio traded shots with policemen who were about to serve an arrest warrant on his sibling, Marlon, on Ilang Ilang Street, Pingkian 3, Barangay Pasong Tamo. The warrant issued by a Quezon City court was in connection with a case filed against the younger Serabio for slight physical injuries, according to Supt. Alex Alberto, chief of the Quezon City Police District’s Station 5. Marlon, who managed to escape during the shooting, is also facing charges for estafa and involvement in illegal cockfights, said Senior Insp. Patrick Domondon, the leader of the arrest team. Domondon said the QCPD was also verifying reports linking the Serabios to robberies and illegal gambling activities in Fairview. Senior Insp. Elmer Monsalve, chief of the QCPD homicide section, said Marlon was also being considered a suspect in the killing of village watchman Jerson Dazo in Fairview on Black Saturday. Jodee A. Agoncillo
