Parañaque gov’t eyes new market site for Baclaran vendors
The Parañaque City government said the perennial traffic problem on Roxas Boulevard could be solved within the year as it unveiled a plan to set up a flea market that would accommodate the hundreds of vendors around the Redemptorist church in Baclaran. Mayor Edwin Olivarez said all vendors around the Baclaran church, especially those occupying the service road of Roxas Boulevard, would be moved to the proposed market area in a one-hectare government-owned lot at Aseana complex. “This will be the permanent solution to the decade-old vending and traffic problems in Baclaran,” Olivarez said in a statement on Saturday. Vans and trucks would no longer be allowed to park on Roxas Boulevard to deliver their goods in establishments around Baclaran church, while jeepney and van terminals would also be dismantled. Parañaque City officials, along with Metropolitan Manila Development Authority officer in charge Tim Orbos, inspected the area before the Holy Week. Nick Ferrer of the city’s public information office said the Parañaque local government would allocate an initial budget of P40 million to build 500 stalls, which should be ready for occupancy by the end of the year.—Dexter Cabalza
Free health seminars on Buteyko breathing
Australian practitioner Jac Vidgen, who introduced Buteyko breathing in Asian countries two decades ago, will conduct free introductory seminars on correct breathing and healthy living starting April 19. Buteyko breathing, a clinically proven technique that delivers immediate and sustained relief from asthma, allergies, anxiety and sleep apnea, has transformed thousands of lives since it was developed by Russian respiratory scientist, Dr. Konstantin Pavolvich Buteyko, over 50 years ago. “Breathing correctly could be the most important factor in having a longer and healthier life as it helps increase your immunity and resistance to infections, improve the quality of your sleep and concentration, provide you with more energy and counter stress,” Vidgen said. The seminars will teach breathing exercises and lifestyle modifications for relief not only against asthma and other respiratory symptoms, but also health concerns like emphysema, immune and hormonal imbalance, chronic fatigue syndrome, and stress. Buteyko breathing is the only complementary treatment endorsed by the British Medical Association for asthma, and is accepted in Australia, the United States and Canada. The seminars will be in Quezon City on April 19, from 7 to 9 p.m., and April 22, from 4 to 6 p.m., at Health Is In (tel. no. 4160123) at 59 West Avenue corner Cavite Street. Another seminar is set for April 23, from 4 to 6 p.m. at PhilDHRRA Partnership Center (tel. no. 5356368), at 59 C. Salvador St., Loyola Heights. Vidgen will also be in Makati on April 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at In Touch Community Services (tel. no. 8931893) at 48-A McKinley Road, Forbes Park, across San Antonio Plaza.
