The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras finally spewed their venom and kept their season alive as they blasted the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 95-57, in Game 3 of the best-of-five finals series in the seniors division of the 2011 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament Thursday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The lopsided win by the Cobras sliced the series deficit to 1-2 heading to tonight’s pivotal Game 4, where the reigning champions Webmasters get another shot at hoisting the title for the second year in a row.
However, the Cobras will be a hard bunch to put down with the confidence and momentum that they gained from their incredible performance in Game 3.
Eleazar Armecin woke up from his five-point slumber in Game 2 and scored a game-high 22 points while Rene Pacquiao added 19. Justin Aboude and Bon Guillena chipped in 15 and 14, respectively while Joseph Nalos tallied 10.
UC was in the driver’s seat, 27-22, when the Cobras let loose of a sizzling 17-2 run that came as an ominous sign of things to come for the Webmasters that evening.
Armecin, who was playing with an injured knee, had two three-point bombs in that stretch while Aboude, Pacquiao, Guillena and Junrey Ortuyo all chipped in for a 39-29 halftime lead.
Things got worse for the Webmasters as the Cobras kept the pressure up on both ends of the floor, which resulted in a 16-3 blast that established a 55-32 lead.
At the helm of that breakaway was Armecin, who shrugged off his injury and the Webmasters’ defense with his slashing moves to the basket en route to scoring half of their points in that rally.
Another 19-2 run was completed by the Cobras in the fourth period that established their biggest lead of the game at 39, 89-50.
Junemar Fajardo was held down to just 19 points for the Webmasters as the rest of his teammates suddenly had their guns silenced.
In the juniors division, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles try to capture the championship today as they take on the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers in Game 4 of their series. The Eagles hold a 2-1 series lead.
