For last time, Senate pays tribute to Leticia Ramos-Shahani

Prominent personalities in politics showed up at the Senate on Thursday to pay their last respects to former Senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani, who passed away last Monday at age 87.

Shahani’s brother, former President Fidel V. Ramos (FVR), led the necrological service for her at the Senate session hall at 2:30 p.m.

Among those who came to condole with the bereft family were former President and Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, former Vice President Teofisto Guingona Jr., former Senate President Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr, former senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Rene Saguisag, Ramon Magsaysay Jr., Wigberto Tañada, Heherson Alvarez, Nikki Coseteng, Orlando Mercado, Rodolfo Biazon and Alfredo Lim.

Incumbent senators led by Senate President Aqulino “Koko” Pimentel III, Majority Leader Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, Minority Leader Franklin Drilon, Senators Loren Legarda, Bam Aquino, and Alan Cayetano also attended the necrological service.

Also in attendance were former Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. and former Quezon Representative Erin Tañada.

Among those who gave eulogies for the late senator were Nene Pimentel, Saguisag, Magsayay, and Aquino.

Senator Sonny Angara, in a statement, called Shahani a “woman of substance.”

“A woman of substance; a brilliant lawmaker; a nationalist diplomat; a fighter for women’s rights. As a public servant, Senator Shahani displayed an exemplary and unselfish duty to the Filipino people and the country,” Angara said.

“RIP (rest in peace) former Senator Letty Ramos Shahani. Condolences to the family she left behind including former President FVR and former Vice Governor Shahani,” he added.

Shahani served the Senate from 1987 to 1998. She was the first female senator elected as Senate President Pro-Tempore in the 9th and 10thCongresses. IDL/rga
