SAN PEDRO CITY—The alleged mastermind of the so-called ‘rent sangla’ scheme was arrested by members of the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) of thePhilippine National Police in Sta. Rosa City in Laguna.
In a telephone interview on Friday, Senior Insp. Myra Novilla, HPG spokesperson for the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) region, said a police team was on its way to court here for the inquest of suspect Rafaela Anunciacion.
Anunciacion, 56, was arrested at 8:30 p.m. Thursday in a house in Sta. Rosa. Police were armed with an arrest warrant issued by Judge Francisco Pano of the Regional Trial Court Branch 93 here.
Anunciacion is allegedly the brains behind a multimillion-peso scheme where vehicle owners are duped into paying money supposedly for a car rental business.
Earlier, police arrested Anunciacion’s live-in partner, Tychicus Nambio, also in Laguna.
Aside from Anunciacion, also facing charges were Eleanor Rosales, a resident of Sta. Rosa; Anastacia Cauyan, of Biñan City; and Jhennelyn Berroyo of this city. Police have yet to arrest them.
The police earlier said 457 cars were recovered from the group in a series of operations in Metro Manila, Calabarzon and Central Luzon. JN/rga
