Marikina police release image of gunman in Ateneo teacher’s slay
The Marikina police have released a facial composite of the gunman who killed an Ateneo de Manila high school teacher in July last year.
Senior Supt. Lorenzo Holanday Jr., the city police chief, on Thursday said the image was based on descriptions given by an eyewitness in the shooting of 24-year-old math teacher Emmanuel Jose Pavia.
Holanday stuck to the earlier police theory that Pavia’s death was a case of mistaken identity and that the shooter may be after a target involved in a drug transaction.
Pavia was shot in the head and back while walking home on the night of July 18, 2016, and was pronounced dead in the hospital an hour later. Chief Insp. Eduardo Cayetano, investigation section chief, said security camera videos in the area showed that the gunman apparently had three accomplices who served as lookouts. —Jodee A. Agoncillo
Over 2K jaywalkers caught since January—MMDA
A total of 2,211 jaywalkers have been apprehended by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) from Jan. 1 to Feb. 14.
Of the figure, 1,823 violators have not settled the P500 fine, based on records of the MMDA Anti-Jaywalking Unit.
MMDA general manager Tim Orbos on Thursday reminded motorists, especially drivers of public utility vehicles to drop off and pick up passengers on designated loading and unloading bays.
Passengers who alight in the middle of the road or outside designated zones will be apprehended for jaywalking, Orbos said.
“This bad habit can cause danger not only to themselves but also to others. Passengers should learn to obey traffic rules and orderly line up to get on and get off PUVs at designated loading and unloading bays,” the official said in a statement.
Violators have the option to pay the P500 fine or render a three-hour community service which is scheduled every last Friday of the month. —Erika Sauler
