Why they won’t get hitched

Dennis and partner Dawn seem content with their arrangement.

“We’ve been together for 15 years. We have two children but no marriage plans yet,” says Dennis, who claims he has some savings and has managed to buy a house after working as a nurse in London.

“[S]he (Dawn) doesn’t believe in marriage because she came from a broken family. I believe she was traumatized when her parents separated when she was young. She and her four siblings had to be separated and made to choose whose parent they wanted to go with,” he says.

Dennis says he has already proposed marriage twice to Dawn but was turned down each time. “What’s important is that we’re together and we’re happy,” he says.

Like Dawn, Alex, 30, does not believe in marriage.

“Since when did marriage contracts become proofs of love?” Alex asks.

For her, love does not need any proof but love itself. She prefers to be with her longtime boyfriend—with their freedom intact.
