Starting today, public utility jeepneys (PUJs) coming from P. Burgos Street in Makati City will no longer be allowed to turn right on Edsa-Guadalupe as part of a move to gradually ban the “King of the Road” from Metro Manila’s busiest thoroughfare.
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), in coordination with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), is reviewing the franchise of passenger jeepneys passing through Edsa as part of efforts to ease traffic and speed up travel time on the major road.
MMDA supervising officer for operations Bong Nebrija said on Sunday that the ban would be implemented by sector and initially, in the Guadalupe area since PUJs making a turn to Cloverleaf Park were causing heavy traffic up to Estrella.
Earlier, the agency coordinated with Barangay Guadalupe Nuevo officials about the closure of the P. Burgos exit to Edsa.
Violators will be apprehended for disregarding traffic signs while sidewalk vendors and illegally parked vehicles will also be targeted, the MMDA said.
Authorities said that around 2,600 PUJs would be diverted from Edsa to P. Victor Street, mostly those plying the Guadalupe-Fort Bonifacio Gate 3, AFP Housing and Leon Guinto routes.
LTFRB board member Aileen Lizada said they would soon issue an order regarding the routes of affected jeepneys passing through Edsa.
