The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said the establishment of the National Space Agency will open doors for Project Noah (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards) researchers and scientists, allaying fears that shutting down the program will render its staff jobless.
In a statement, the DOST encouraged the staff of Project Noah to sign up with the National Space Agency once created, saying the new office will require the skills of some people involved in the project.
Science Secretary Fortunato dela Peña earlier confirmed that his recommendation to issue an executive order creating a transitory space agency had been approved by Malacañang.
The proposal was for a 10-year Space Development Program with P24 billion in funding that would usher in the creation of the National Space Agency.
Project Noah executive director Mahar Lagmay has decried the government’s lack of support to the project, which has helped save many lives since July 2012 owing to its on-time warnings on severe weather.
Lagmay had announced the shutdown of Project Noah on Feb. 28 due to lack of funds.
