UP Sigma Beta sorority marks 85th founding anniversary
The UP Sigma Beta sorority, the first sorority organized in the University of the Philippines, celebrates its 85th founding anniversary on February 14.
“Being the first is a feat. Growing in strength and conquering challenges through 85 years is beyond outstanding,” said lawyer Marilyn B. Barua-Yap, president of the UP Sigma Beta Sorority Alumnae Association Inc.
Yap said that for their sorority to survive 85 more years, it needs to innovate and further strengthen its ranks as a haven for the nurturing of the values of excellence, integrity and service among young women students.
The UP Sigma Beta Sorority’s 85th anniversary theme “Excellence, Integrity, and Service” is reflected in the various commemorative activities lined up. These include the launching of its Expanded Scholarship Program to benefit more deserving but financially needy women students; sponsorship of in-campus and off-campus fora and seminars on relevant current issues; and the conduct of various “Sigma Beta Cheers” such as medical and dental missions, wellness and personality development seminars, feeding programs for indigent kids, and welfare assistance for children cancer patients.
To celebrate the sorority’s 85th anniversary, the UP Sigma Beta Alumnae Foundation, Inc. will hold Orchid Ball at the Fairmont Hotel in Makati on Feb. 11, 2017.
