DID YOU KNOW: First Quarter Storm

/ 12:26 AM January 30, 2017

On Jan. 30, 1970, the National Union of Students of the Philippines called for a nonpartisan Constitutional Convention and asked then President Ferdinand Marcos not to run for a third term. The unproductive dialogue led to a riot between the police and 2,000 demonstrators outside Malacañang. Six students died in what was dubbed the beginning of the First Quarter Storm. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
