NBI man kills colleague at Tarlac cockpit

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga – An officer of the National Bureau of Investigation killed a fellow employee near a cockpit arena in a Tarlac town on Wednesday night (Jan. 26) following a heated argument.

Lavernie Vitug, an NBI security officer in Tarlac, was shot dead by Boy de Castro, an NBI intelligence officer assigned in Manila, at 6:20 p.m. outside the Triple 888 Cockpit Coliseum in Capas town.

According to the Central Luzon police, De Castro confronted Vitug for placing bets at a cockfight while wearing his NBI uniform. Vitug reacted by daring De Castro to present his NBI badge.

Vitug walked to his parked vehicle, took out a revolver and approached De Castro, who had proceeded to his own vehicle.

The police said Vitug threatened De Castro with his handgun. De Castro, according to the report, alighted from his vehicle, hurled his badge at the victim and fired his own gun, killing Vitug.

Investigators found three empty bullet shells at the crime scene. De Castro is at large. CDG/rga
