Baggak Festival

A celebration in Bauang, La Union province featuring activities such as kickboxing, field demos, beauty contest, musical performances as well as programs for the elderly. “Baggak” is Ilocano word for “morning star.”

Jan. 6

Sinulog Festival

Kickoff festivities of the Sinulog Festival, one of Cebu’s biggest and most popular festivals. Events include a trade fair at SM City Cebu, a Mass at the Basilica del Santo Niño, a parade and a launching program at the Fuente Osmeña Circle. Other activities will be held daily in the run-up to the Sinulog grand parade on Jan. 15.

Jan. 1

Miguel Lopez de Legazpi establishes the town of Cebu in 1571 and named it “La Villa del Santisimo Nombre de Jesus” (Town of the Most Holy Name of Jesus). Fifty married couples arrive to populate the settlement.

Romblon is declared a province in 1941 by virtue of Commonwealth Act No. 38

The municipality of San Carlos in Pangasinan province becomes a city in 1966 by virtue of Republic Act No. 4487.
