Signal No.1 up in Southern Luzon, Visayas as ‘Nina’ nears

Signal No. 1 was hoisted in parts of Southern Luzon and Visayas as Severe Tropical Storm “Nina” (Nock-Ten) continued to move west northwest, the state weather bureau said on Friday afternoon.

Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Northern and Eastern Samar were placed under Signal No. 1, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

Nina maintained its strength of 105 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 130 kph, moving west northwest at 20 kph.

The storm was last located 700 kilometers east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar.

Nina is expected to make landfall as a typhoon over Catanduanes by Sunday afternoon or evening.

Pagasa said that strong winds and storm surges are possible along the areas in the path of Nina.
