The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has recovered hundreds of Malay giant scorpions abandoned in Palawan last weekend.
In a statement, the PCG said the species, numbering 370, were found by Coast Guard personnel stationed at the Liminangcong Pier in Taytay, Palawan, last Dec. 11.
The giant scorpions were kept in tin cans packed in two boxes and abandoned at the cargo holding area of the Liminangcong Pier.
The PCG said the giant scorpions have an estimated market value of P564,000. A pier worker reported the abandoned cargo to the PCG.
The Coast Guard personnel stationed at the Liminangcong Pier inspected two boxes containing the giant scorpions, which were initially declared to be containing cashew nuts and shipped by a certain “Marissa.”
It was intended to be loaded on M/V Palawan Pearl bound for Manila.—JULIE M. AURELIO
