Today, Dec. 16, is the 2nd death anniversary of Abdulmari Asia Imao, the Philippines’ first Muslim national artist. Through his paintings and sculptures, he popularized the mythical “sarimanok” of Maranao legends. Among his famous works include Mural Relief on Filmmaking found in the Manila City Hall and Sulu Warriors in the Sulu Provincial Capitol. He was named National Artist for Visual Arts in 2006. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
