Will the sports complex built in 1934 and designed by architect Juan Arellano escape the wrecking ball?

Will the sports complex built in 1934 and designed by architect Juan Arellano escape the wrecking ball?

A petition has been circulating online urging President Duterte to save the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC) in Manila following reports that Mayor Joseph Estrada plans to turn it into a mall.

The petition on Change.org titled, “Save Rizal Memorial Sports Complex,” was launched on Nov. 26. The petitioner, Save Manila, aims to gather 7,500 signatures before submitting it to Mr. Duterte, Estrada, the Manila City Council and Philippine Sports Commission.

At press time, the petition had gathered 6,681 signatures.

“This petition calls for the Manila City Government to improve the Sports Complex and redevelop the Harrison Plaza-RMSC area into 60 percent open and green space,” it said.

It added that the stadium, coliseum and the rest of the complex were “architectural and historical gems, as [these] were designed in the art deco style and [had played host to] different international matches.”

It is not only a gem; it is a functioning and international class sports facility,” Save Manila said as it urged the city government to adopt the proposal of architect Paulo Alcazaren “which provides a “comprehensive and contextual solution.”

Heritage advocates have criticized Estrada for his plan, saying another shopping mall would not be good for the city’s cultural development.
