Comelec urges public to sign up as voter registration resumes

The Commission on Elections urged anew the public to take advantage of the resumption of the voters’ registration, with more than 10,000 voters in Metro Manila signing up during its first week.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said 10,584 voters so far in the National Capital Region registered from November 7 to 12 as the registration period began anew.

In a statement, Jimenez said Taguig City had the highest number of registrants at 1,884 voters.

There were 116 first-time voters aged 15 to 17 years and 5,821 voters 18 years old and above, who filed their registration for the Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

The Comelec said the rest were voters who signed up for the barangay polls.

The poll body resumed the voters registration for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections last November 7, which will end on April 29, 2017.

The Comelec is expecting two million voters to sign up for the Sangguniang Kabataan elections, and another three million for the barangay elections.

Jimenez said they are looking at a possible 55 million voters taking part in the said elections next year. CDG
