3 killed as trucks collide in Quezon

LUCENA CITY—Three persons were killed and two others were hurt when a truck hit another truck along Maharlika Highway in Atimonan town in Quezon province on Sunday night, police said on Monday.

Senior Police Officer 2 Joseph Ramirez, Atimonan police investigator, said a Bicol-bound six-wheel truck, driven by Noel Donaire, swerved and hit a Metro Manila-bound 10-wheel cargo truck in Barangay (village) Malinao Ilaya at 11 p.m.

The driver of the 10-wheel truck, Noli Barnuevo, and one of his passengers, Cielito Senar, died instantly from head and body injuries, police said.

Another passenger, Nestor Mino Obias, died while being treated at the Doña Marta District Hospital in Atimonan.

Donaire, whose truck turned turtle and skidded toward the road shoulder, escaped after the accident but later surrendered to the police, Ramirez said in a telephone interview.

Michael Batalona, Donaire’s helper, was taken to a local hospital. RAM/rga
