THE winners of the Annie Chen Design Awards were presented to the members and patrons of the Cebu Design Education Foundation (CDEF) in a cocktail party hosted by bridge jewelry designer and book author Annie Chen, who flew in from Singapore to grace the occasion at 856 G Gallery on May 21.
Saul Sander Martinez, a freelance graphic design artist, won the AC Design Award for graphic design by conceptualizing a state-of-the-art signage for Business Walls and Ethos Bloc, a contemporary building and design oriented apartment located on AS Fortuna Street, Mandaue City.
“The process I had to go through in my participation in this design contest is enriching,” Martinez said. “I’m only a graphic designer but the entry requirements go beyond creativity. There’s so much discipline needed and I had to consult with engineers and an architect to put more credibility to my entry.”
Shally Mar Rosales, an interior designer, bagged the AC Design Award for Architectural Design by presenting an artsy door leading to the two hallways of Ethos Bloc. When asked about her experience in the contest, she mused, “It’s a serious contest. You have to do a lot of homework to come up with a plausible entry.”
The Annie Chen Design Awards is a competition managed by CDEF, a non-stock non-profit foundation formed by Cebu’s top-notch designers like Kenneth Cobonpue, the organization’s vice chairman.
CDEF runs a design lecture series for design students and young designers. The foundation also manages the Chiye Mori Design library. For more information, call 3443039 or send an e-mail to info@cdef.org.ph.
