CEBU CITY — A multi-awarded sharp-shooting cop who was convicted of homicide six years ago and  served out his prison term has been released on bail pending his plea for a case review with the Court of
Appeals and  reassigned back to Cebu City.

Chief Supt. Noli Taliño, director of the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7), on Thursday said he ordered the return of 53-year-old SPO1 Adonis Dumpit from the Bohol Provincial Police Office to the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).

Taliño, in an interview, said he approved the request of Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, deputy mayor for police matters, to reassign Dumpit to Cebu City.

Dumpit reported to the CCPO last Monday, Taliño said.

Cebu City also needs more policemen and Dumpit will surely help fill in the vacancy, according to Taliño.

“Dati naman siya na-assign sa Cebu City. (Dumpit used to be assigned to Cebu City before he was transferred to Bohol),” he said.

If Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña wanted Dumpit back as his bodyguard, Taliño said the mayor should make a formal request addressed to Philippine National Police Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.

“Only the chief PNP can approve those kinds of requests,” he said.

Dumpit, a sharpshooter and multi-awarded policeman, was released from the Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Leyte last May, after the Court of Appeals allowed him to post a P250,000-bail pending the resolution of his appeal because he has served his minimum prison term of six years and exhibited good behavior during his incarceration. Dumpit, then with the CCPO, was convicted of homicide by the Regional Trial Court in Cebu City for killing a 17-year-old suspected robber in Cebu City.

The administrative case filed against him in relation to the case was also dismissed by the National Police Commission, allowing him to return to the police service.   SFM/rga
