CEBU CITY — A Canter truck loaded with vegetables for the city’s biggest public market lost its brakes and killed two boys and a woman past 1 p.m. on Tuesday in Argao town, southern Cebu.

Ten passengers of the truck were also wounded after the vehicle hit a coconut tree and fell on its side in Barangay Gutlang.

The fatalities were identified as Jelyn Pescadero, 29, and her son, Jaymar, 8; and Joven Neri, 11.

Edgar Pescadero, the 45-year-old truck driver, said the truck was in good condition when they left in Barangay Obaob, about 1 p.m. for the Carbon Market in Cebu City to deliver vegetables.

Fifteen persons, including four children, rode the truck since they wanted to sell their vegetables in Carbon overnight.

But upon reaching Barangay Gutlang, about 5 kilometers away from Obaob, the truck lost its brakes while running downhill.

Edgar, who was wounded on the forehead, identified his brother as the truck owner.

Most of those who boarded the truck were the driver’s relatives. The victims were brought to the Isidro Kintanar Memorial Hospital in Argao but some were transferred to the Cebu City hospital.

Only five of those injured were identified by the police. They were Leonila Pescadero, Janice Pantinople, Rodeglinda Pantinople, Cirila Pantinople, Vicentia Fuentes and Anastacia Geverola.  SFM
