School, city officials decry delay in repair of Sirao school building

AS  the school season starts next month, more classes in Cebu City may be held outside due to the dismal condition of their school buildings.

Sirao elementary school officials complained about the delay in the repairs of their school building to the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW).

The DEPW earlier said the school has unstable concrete columns, beams and slabs, cracked walls and tilting floors inside the school building.

DEPW wants the contractor identified as the San Narciso Construction firm to finish their repairs. The company began fixing one classroom last year and have yet to complete their repairs.

Sirao school officials said they are considering to hold classes outside for their 450 high school students if the building remains in disrepair.

They requested the Department of Education in Central Visayas (DepEd-7) to install rail fences, gutters and comfort pipes in two buildings of the Sirao Integrated School.

In Toong Integrated school, elementary students will hold classes under mango trees after their building contractor MSDLR failed to complete their repairs.

Construction of the school buildings were funded by the Cebu City government.

Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young said he will not allow students to use the defective school buildings in Sirao and Toong.

He said the city government may spend for makeshift tents as temporary classrooms for the students.
