REP. Benhur Salimbangon of Cebu’s 4th district  said that he is against the registration of electric cooperatives with the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA).

“If they will go to CDA, there is a ‘profit motive’. . .The cooperative is a non-profit service-oriented company,” he told the 888 News Forum yesterday.

He said  electric cooperatives should remain under government superivision through the National Electrification Administration (NEA).

“At least we (government) will have control. If big corporations will be attracted to buy, it will become a profit-motivated company,” he said.

Cebu has four electric cooperaties—the Bantayan Electric Cooperative (Banelco) in Bantayan, Cebu Electric Cooperative (Cebeco) 1 in Dumanjug, Cebeco 2 in Bogo and Cebeco 3 in Toledo City. /Correspondent Rhea Ruth V. Rosell
