Senator Leila de Lima questioned President Rodrigo Duterte’s Thursday announcement of enhanced ties with China after declaring his “separation” from the United States.
During a Friday forum held by women’s rights activists, De Lima cited the statement of Philippine National Police Director-General Ronald dela Rosa that China is one of the major sources of illegal drugs entering the country.
“’Di kaya tumatanggap na tayo ng drug money nang ‘di natin namamalayan (Could we unwittingly be receiving drug money)?” De Lima exclaimed.

De Lima also questioned Duterte’s cooperation with China when the Asian giant had supposedly disrespected the country in the light of their South China Sea maritime dispute.
“Ano kaya ang meron sa China? Bakit sobra-sobra ang kabaitan niya?” De Lima asked. “Samantalang walang respeto sa atin, sa rule of law. ‘Di sinusunod ang monumental ruling ng arbitral court.”
(What is it with China that he is being so kind to it? It did not respect us and our rule of law. It did not accede to the monumental ruling of the arbitral court.)

Later, during an open forum, De Lima expounded on her criticism and noted how Duterte’s Cabinet officials are now attempting to interpret his “earth-shaking” statement.
“Di pwedeng siya lang! ‘Di pwedeng di muna niya konsultahin ang Gabinete. ‘Di pwedeng ‘di muna konsultahin ang taumbayan!” she said. “Napakalawak ng repercussions niyan!”
(He should not be the only one making this decision. He cannot not consult his Cabinet. He cannot not consult the people. His statements have major repercussions.)
De Lima said this is what happens “with that kind of a President,” adding that she had long warned about this even during the campaign period./rga
