Invitation sent to UN to probe drug killings — Palace

Malacañang is awaiting the response of the United Nations (UN) after it confirmed on Wednesday that it had sent a formal invitation to rapporteur Agnes Callamard to investigate the drug killings in the Philippines.

“Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea said the Palace has sent the invitation to the UN rapporteur Agnes Callamard and is awaiting her response,” Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said in a press briefing.

Abella said the government urged the UN to also probe the killings of police forces in drug operations.

“In its invitation, the Palace also urged—and I think it is notable—the UN rapporteur to include in her investigation the killings of law enforcers by drug suspects so she could obtain an accurate perspective of the drug problem in the country,” he said.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier invited the UN, the European Union and even the United States to come to the Philippines and look into the drug-related killings in the country. CBB
