Tropical storm “Julian” (international name: “Aere”) intensified as it crossed the Balintang Channel, the state weather bureau said Thursday morning.
Signal No. 2 was raised over the Batanes and Babuyan Group of Islands, while the rest of Northern Cagayan, Apayao and Ilocos Norte were placed under Signal No. 1, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.
Moderate to occasional heavy rain is expected within the 300-kilometer diameter of the storm.
Julian is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Thursday afternoon.

Julian was last spotted 70 kilometers south-southeast of Basco, Batanes. It blew winds of 85 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 120 kph.
The storm was moving westward at 22 kph.
Pagasa warned small seacraft against venturing out over the northern seaboard of Northern Luzon.
