‘Julian’ maintains strength; 5 areas still under Signal No. 1

Tropical cyclone warning Signal No. 1 remained hoisted over five areas in the country as tropical depression “Julian” maintained its strength, the state weather bureau said on Wednesday morning.

In its 11 a.m. advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Batanes, northern Cagayan, Babuyan Group of Islands, Apayao and Ilocos Norte were under Signal No. 1 as Julian moved closer to extreme northern Luzon.

Pagasa said moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall is expected within the weather disturbance’s 300-kilometer diameter.

Julian was packing maximum sustained winds of up to 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

The tropical depression was last plotted at 465 kilometers east southeast of Basco, Batanes as it moved west at 25 kph.

Julian is expected to be at 65 km north northeast of Calayan, Cagayan on Thursday morning; 465 km west northwest of Basco, Batanes or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Friday morning; and 805 km west northwest of Basco, Batanes on Saturday morning.
