The late nationalist writer, lawyer and former Senator Rafael Palma was born in Tondo, Manila, on Oct. 24, 1874. Palma joined the revolutionary paper La Independencia as a staff member in 1898 and established the paper El Renacimiento in 1901. He became the fourth president of the University of the Philippines on July 18, 1925. Palma died from brain cancer on May 24, 1939.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
