City cuts 50 casual workers, hires 186 more

DESPITE the nonrenewal of the contracts of 50 casual workers at Cebu City Hall after they failed the performance evaluation ordered by Mayor Michael Rama, the city’s roster of casual workers continue to increase with the addition of 186 new ones.

Cebu City hall now has about 5,000 workers. This include 1,246 regular employees; 3,222 casual employees; and 532 job-order workers.

Most of the city’s casual workers are assigned at the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) with 358, garbage collection with  321, Citom with 292, Department of Government Services with 223, Office of the Mayor with 198 and the City Health Department with 173.

“Ug naa man gani (minimal) increase, it’s because of the new challenges, the need to have some new skills.  But rest assured there is no politics involved here (in the hiring),” said Rama.

City Human Resource Development Office  records show that the city government didn’t renew the contracts of 50 casual workers on July 1.

Among those who were no longer rehired were members of the Mayor’s Management Team (MMT) of former mayor Tomas Osmeña who used to be assigned at the South Road Properties (SRP) management office.

The Department for the Welfare of the Urban Poor (DWUP) had the most number of casual employees who did not get a renewal of their contracts at 11, followed by the mayor’s office with 9  and Citom with 6.

New hirings of 186 personnel were also made from the period of Jan. 1 to Sept. 30.

Among the city hall offices and departments, the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) had the most number of new employees with 33, followed by office of the mayor with 21, DWUP with 21, accounting office with 14, Citom with 14 and the Sanguniang Panlungsud with 13. /Chief of Reporters Doris C. Bongcac
