FLAG carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) has banned the use and charging of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones on all its flights in compliance with a directive of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
In an advisory on Monday, PAL said it began implementing the ban on Sept. 9. It said the mobile device would not be allowed as a check-in item but may be hand-carried as long as it is turned off throughout the flight.
“All Samsung Galaxy Note 7 units, whether used or brand new, will not be accepted as PAL cargo shipment,” it said.
“Safety remains a cornerstone of PAL operations and, as such, the flag carrier will ensure full compliance on board each flight and is seeking the full cooperation of its passengers,” it said.
The IATA directive came on the heels of a recall by Samsung of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone after several reported instances of the unit catching fire or exploding during charging.
Over the weekend, budget carrier Cebu Pacific Air issued a similar advisory on the Samsung smartphone on its flights. Jocelyn R. Uy
