Signal No. 1 up in 8 areas as ‘Ferdie’ intensifies further

Signal No. 1 was raised over eight areas in Luzon on Monday afternoon as typhoon “Ferdie”  further intensified, according to the state weather bureau.

In its 5 p.m. weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the following areas are under Signal No. 1: Cagayan, Northern Isabela, Kalinga, Apayao, Abra, Ilocos Norte, Batanes and Babuyan Group of Islands.

As of 4 p.m., “Ferdie” was plotted at 780 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan and forecast to move at west northwest with a speed of 20 kph. The typhoon has maximum sustained winds of up to 185 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 220 kph.

Pagasa said estimated rainfall amount is moderate to heavy within the 500 km diameter of the typhoon.

It advised residents in extreme northern Luzon to take precautionary measures against strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Ferdie is expected to be at 330 km east southeast of Basco, Batanes on Tuesday afternoon; 130 km west of Itbayat, Batanes on Wednesday afternoon; 455 km west northwest of Itbayat, Batanes or outside the Philippine area of responsibility on Thursday afternoon; and 755 km northwest of Itbayat, Batanes on Friday afternoon.
