New IT program for Valenzuela students eyed

High-school students in Valenzuela City may be making their own computer games soon.

Valenzuela City Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian bared plans to draft a new ICT curriculum that will equip students in their four years of high school with more advanced information technology knowledge.

The idea was broached in Gatchalian’s state of education address delivered Saturday afternoon at the city auditorium.

The event, which lasted for more than four hours, had the theme “Good Education is Good Governance,” and was attended by parents, students, teachers and district supervisors from the city’s 32 barangays.

“All of the public high schools are equipped with state-of-the-art computer laboratories which we must utilize not just for simple computer operations but for more advanced information technology knowledge,” Gatchalian said.

He said the new curriculum, which the local Department of Education will help draft,  will be geared towards making students proficient in computer programming, web design and development software, short-term courses usually taken up in computer schools.
