6.1 earthquake shakes parts of South

AN EARTHQUAKE of 6.1 magnitude struck Mindanao on Sunday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

No damage was reported from the quake that struck at 10:30 a.m. but people in areas near the epicenter in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, panicked.

The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers 12 km northwest of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur, the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage and no tsunami warning.

“I was inside my room when the shaking started, lasting almost a  minute. I felt dizzy so I rushed outside,” Richard Grande, a radio broadcaster in San Francisco, Agusan del Sur, said.

It was felt at Intensity 6 in Talacogon; Intensity 4 in the cities of Butuan, Tagum and Bislig, and Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur; Intensity 3 in Gingoog, Balingwan and Balingasag in Misamis Oriental and Davao  City; Intensity 2 in  Cagayan de Oro City, and Intensity 1 in Kidapawan City.
