Guatemalan man gets 15 years for killing rival soccer fan

GUATEMALA CITY — A court in Guatemala has sentenced a man to 15 years in prison for killing a fan of a rival soccer team.

Francisco Pirir was convicted of helping stab and beat to death Kevin Diaz in 2014. Pirir said he acted at the behest of a local radio sports commentator.

Marlon Puente, a commentator known as “Pirulo,” had egged on fans of the Club Municipal team to attack supporters of the rival Club Comunicaciones.

Pirir, a Municipal supporter, said “I did what Pirulo said.”

Puente pleaded guilty to instigating a crime, and was sentenced to three years, but served only a couple of months before being allowed to pay a fine.
