Cavite cop shot dead during surveillance

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines—A policeman was killed Thursday night while doing undercover surveillance on a group of suspected drug peddlers in Bacoor, Cavite, the authorities said Friday.

Police Officer 1 Pedro Enriquez of the Bacoor police died of a gunshot wound in the head at the St. Dominic Hospital in Bacoor late Thursday, said Superintendent Edgardo Roquero, the town’s police chief, in a phone interview.

Roquero said Enriquez and a police asset were deployed to verify reports of illegal drug trade in Barangay Niog 3 at around 8:50 p.m. on Thursday.

Enriquez was directed to limit his activities to covert operation as he had been assigned at the Bacoor police station for just about three weeks, said Roquero.

“The suspects were probably tipped off that he was a cop,” Roquero said, quoting intelligence reports.

He said Enriquez was cornered by a group of six men in a narrow alley where he was slain.

Police were now tracking down the suspects, said Roquero.
