91-year old sick man knits hats for homeless

Regardless of any circumstances, a willing heart can always find a way to help those in need.

A 91-year-old man in hospice care in Grandville, Michigan, USA, is doing the best he can to help homeless men fend off the dreaded winter cold by knitting and donating caps for them.

Despite being stuck in a hospital bed as he battles skin cancer and a tumor on his kidney, Moorie Boogart has been willingly knitting the caps for more than 15 years now.

Even at his advanced age, the Navy veteran said he still manages to produce  a hat every two days and has stopped counting after making 8,000 of them, a Fox News report said.

“Why do I do it? It just makes me feel good,” the nonagenarian in bed rest was quoted as saying.

Despite being uncertain of how much time he has left, Boogard takes solace knowing he’s spending the rest of his days helping others.

“This has been the best thing that’s happened to me because I just stay in my room,” he said, adding that the only time he’s not knitting is when he’s sleeping.

“I do it awfully slow,” he added, describing his work phase.

Meanwhile, Boogart’s assisted living home, Cambridge Manors, is accepting donations of yarn and hand-made hats so Boogart can continue his good work.

His latest batch of hats is set to be delivered to shelters in the Michigan area in October.  Khristian Ibarrola
