‘Unstable countries attract IS’

A politically and economically unstable country will allow for the spread of Islamic State (IS) ideologies.
Speaking at a “National Security and the threats from IS” seminar here on Tuesday, Bukit Aman police special branch officer Deputy Supt Tan Kok Thean said countries facing conflict allow IS the opportunity to cause further chaos.
“Syria and Iraq are two such countries.”
“If a country is not stable politically or economically, IS will come in,” he said during the talk, which was organized by Sungai Siput MCA, Gerakan and the Voluntary Security Association.
“They are like cancer, if they are not stopped, they will be uncontrollable,” he said.
DSP Tan added that people should not take for granted the peace in the country.
“Let us be reminded that the peace we are enjoying today does not come from thin air.”
“There have been sacrifices. I urge the people to continue working with the police and the Government to fight against terrorism,” he said.
DSP Tan also said the police are capable and have the experience to deal with terrorists and other threats.
“Malaysia is still able to control the situation.
“We have had dealt with threats since 1948,” he said.
