‘Carina’ landslides displace 100 families in Iloilo town

ILOILO CITY, Philippines—Days of heavy rains triggered a series of landslides in Leon town in Iloilo displacing nearly 100 families.

No one was reported hurt in the landslides that hit the hinterland village of Maliao in Leon since Saturday evening, according to reports reaching the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) in Iloilo City.

A total of 37 families or 92 persons were evacuated to the barangay (village) hall, said Jerry Bionat, PDRRMO executive officer.

The families were given food packs and other relief materials, he said.

Insp. Rewel Pablico, officer in charge of the Leon police station, said the evacuees returned to their homes Monday morning.

Typhoon “Carina” enhanced the southwest monsoon bringing heavy rains in Western Visayas for the past few days.

Leon is among the municipalities identified by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources as highly vulnerable to landslides. RAM/rga
