BUREAU of Immigration (BI) officials have arrested a 27-year-old Chinese student wanted for crimes against the economy in his own country.

Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said that fugitive He Hui was detained at the bureau’s detention facility in Bicutan, Taguig City, following his arrest on July 26 at the BI-student visa section office in Quezon City.

He Hui had been staying and studying in the Philippines since fleeing his country to avoid arrest and prosecution. The Chinese Embassy in Manila informed the BI that he was a fugitive wanted for economic crimes in China.

“We will deport him for being an undesirable and illegal alien,” Morente said, adding that the foreigner was also guilty of overstaying for failing to renew his student visa which expired in February.

Based on BI records, He Hui was an undocumented alien due to the cancellation of his passport by the Chinese government. He had been studying at the Lyceum Northwestern University since 2015.

BI spokesperson Antonette Mangrobang said that He Hui had been in the bureau’s watch list since April 29 after the board of commissioners ordered his summary deportation.
