The state weather bureau on Saturday afternoon said “Carina,” formerly a tropical depression, has intensified into a tropical storm.
In its 5 p.m. weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Carina has maximum sustained winds of up to 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.
As of 4 p.m., its center was last estimated at 290 km Northeast of Virac, Catanduanes.
Signal No. 2 was raised in Isabela.
Signal No. 1 was also hoisted over Cagayan, including Babuyan Group of Islands, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Catanduanes, Aurora, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon and northern Samar.
Pagasa warned against moderate to heavy rains which may trigger flash floods and landslides in areas under Signal No. 1, 2, rest of Cagayan Valley and Cordillera, and the provinces of Masbate, Camarines Norte, and Quezon.
Carina is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Tuesday. JE
