The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is looking into the killings of certain personalities in 2006 as part of their investigation of Cebu businessman Peter Lim, whom President Duterte had accused of being engaged in illegal drug activities.
“We are moving the case forward. We are investigating killings sometime in 2006 related to the Congress investigation on (Lim),” Ferdinand Lavin, NBI spokesperson, told a press conference at the NBI headquarters on Tuesday.
Lavin was apparently referring to the 2001 House of Representatives inquiry into drug trafficking initiated by the then-chair of the committee on dangerous drugs, Cebu City Rep. Antonio Cuenco.
Cuenco had said that Bernard Liu and Ananias Dy, who testified against the suspected drug lord and his brother Wellington in that inquiry, ended up murdered separately in 2006 and 2011.
The NBI had dismissed the complaints against Lim and his brother, however, citing insufficiency of evidence.
According to Lavin, the NBI was also “looking over some documents.”
He said they have asked the Bureau of Immigration for the travel records not only of the businessman from Visayas but also of other personalities “maybe connected with (him).”
