A day after electing its new leader, the Senate on Tuesday began constituting its committees with members of the “supermajority” bloc, which included neophyte senators, getting the juicy posts.

A day after electing its new leader, the Senate on Tuesday began constituting its committees with members of the “supermajority” bloc, which included neophyte senators, getting the juicy posts.

Neophyte Senator Leila De Lima, a member of the Liberal Party (LP), was elected chair of the Senate committee on justice, despite criticisms over her plan to investigate the alleged extrajudicial killings under the new administration.

Another first-termer, Senator Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, was elected chairman of the committee on public works.

Three other neophyte senators—Sherwin Gatchalian, Risa Hontiveros and Joel Villanueva—were elected chairs of the committees on energy, health and labor, respectively.

Senator Richard Gordon got the chairmanship of the powerful blue ribbon committee.

Senator Panfilo Lacson was elected chairman of the committee on public order, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri is chair of the committee on trade while Senator Francis Pangilinan was elected chair of the agriculture committee.

Senate Pro Tempore Franklin Drilon was elected chair of the committee on constitutional and revision of codes and as Majority Leader, Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III would chair the committee on rules.

Senators Loren Legarda and Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara retained their chairmanships of the Senate committee on finance and the ways and means, respectively.

Senator Grace Poe is head of the committee on public services; Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino is chair of the committee on education; Senator Nancy Binay is head of the committee on tourism, while Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito is chairman of the committee on urban planning housing and urban resettlement.

Senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan II was elected head of the Senate committee on national defense.

Senator Cynthia Villar, who failed to keep the agriculture committee, was given two chairmanships—committees on environment and on social justice welfare and rural development.

The chamber has so far constituted 20 of the 39 standing committees.
