TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol—A teenager accidentally shot himself with an improvised gun he had bought, police said.
PO1 Maria Fe Pedros, of the women and children protection desk of Calape police station, said that Boy (not his real name) was secretly working on the makeshift firearm with a 16-year-old companion near a creek in Barangay Liboron at 2 p.m. last Sunday.
Boy bought it for P300 from a friend, station DYTR reported on Monday.
When he attempted to discharge the firearm, he was struck in the rib cage. The bullet shell went toward the victim instead hitting his right side of the waist.
He was rushed to a hospital in Calape town but he was then referred to Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital in Tagbilaran City.
The victim sustained two wounds from the backfire. He was undergoing operation on Tuesday since there were shrapnel or shell fragments left in his body.
Pedros said the 16-year-old companion was sent home after spending a night at the police station to ensure his safety. She said there is no criminal liability for the teenagers.
“No criminal intent. We found out it was lack of precaution,” said Pedros.
The Calape police are investigating to find out where the victim obtained the materials and tools to make the improvised firearm. RAM/rga
