ANS, Unit 2 snatch overall lead

Abellana National High School (ANS) banked on its fiery performance in taekwondo and  some help from boxing and athletics to dislodge the University of  the Visayas (UV) on top of the secondary overall points tally of the 21st  Cebu City Olympics at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.

ANS posted a total of 167 points by topping baseball (25), men’s artistic gymnastics (15), boys taekwondo (15), cheerdance (15), most discplined delegation (15), boxing (10) and parade and saludo (15).

ANS also finished second in girls athletics (20), women’s artistics gymnastics (10) and rhythmic gymnastics (10).

Yesterday, ANS won  two golds in taekwondo, one in boxing and  two in athletics.

Meanwhile, defending secondary champion University of Cebu (UC) blazed the track and field  and swimming competitions, winning a combined  19 gold medals to keep the second spot with 83.5 points.

The Webmasters won nine more golds in athletics from javelin throw, triple jump (boys and girls), 400m (boys), 100-meter run (boys and girls), 4×100 and 4×400 meter relays (boys and girls).

In the pool, UC’s 10 golds came from 100-meter butterfly (boys and girls), 200m freestyle (girls), 200m medley (girls), 200m individual medley (boys and girls) 200m backstroke (girls) 400m freesytle (girls) and 400-meter freestyle relay (boys and girls).

UC, the biggest gainer  yesterday, could have overtook  ANS in the points tally but the swimming events where not yet included as of presstime.

The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) remained at the third spot with 38 points while the University of San Carlos-Basic Education (BED), which won five golds  in swimming, is at fourth place with 32.

Third-day leader UV dropped to fifth spot with 25 points.

Leading the way for ANS were Bon Nico Quano and Kylle John Flores, who won the taekwondo pinweight and flyweight divisions, respectively. Junrel Jiminez won the gold medal in boxing’s pinweight class.

ANS also got support from Angel Sicad, who won a gold in the boys discuss throw event, and Abegail Flores, who ruled the girls 100m hurdles.

In the elementary division, Unit 2 unseated UV in the overall standing with 66. 5 points followed by Unit-4 with 62.

USC-BED is at third place with 55. UV fell to seventh place while defending elementary champion Cebu Institute of Technology-University failed to make it to the top 18.
