SAN PEDRO CITY, Philippines—A truck loaded with gravel rammed a section of a public market in Taytay town in Rizal province, killing a bystander and injuring 29 others on Tuesday.
Supt. Samuel Delorino, Taytay police chief, said the driver Thomas Baldonade, 43, told police that he lost control of the truck after its brakes failed while traversing the Manila East Road in Barangay (village) San Juan at 11 a.m.
The truck hit a section of the busy Taytay public market where fruit vendors were stationed. The accident site is also near a tricycle terminal.
A female bystander, who had yet to be identified at press time, was killed while 29 others were taken to different hospitals in Taytay and Angono towns and Metro Manila.
Delorino said they were still confirming the identity of the fatality, whose face was crushed.
He said the truck also damaged 21 vehicles, among them tricycles and pedicabs.
As of 3 p.m., Delorino said the road had been cleared to ease traffic flow, but the truck had yet to be towed. RAM/rga
