SYDNEY — Police officers opened fire on a man armed with a knife in a Sydney shopping mall on Thursday and injured four people, police said.
Police were called to the mall in the northern suburb of Hornsby around noon following reports that a man was armed with a knife, a police statement said.
“Following a confrontation, a number of shots were fired by police,” the statement said.
“As a consequence, four people have sustained various injuries and have been taken to hospital,” it said.
Police said they did not know what caused the confrontation and declined to reveal further details or say whether the incident was terrorism-related.
