The National Unity Party (NUP) has formalized its alliance with President-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).

The Coalition for Change Agreement between the two parties was signed at a Makati hotel on Thursday.

Among the PDP-Laban officials present during the signing were former Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager Alfonso Cusi and Davao del Norte Representative Pantaleon Alvarez, vice chairman and secretary general of PDP-Laban, respectively.

Cusi has been named by Duterte as the next Energy Secretary while Alvarez will be the President-elect’s candidate for the speakership in the 17th Congress.

NUP, on the other hand, was represented by its chairman, Antipolo Representative Roberto Puno, and the party’s president, Bataan Governor Albert Garcia.

Garcia said that at present, NUP has 32 members in the House of Representatives and around 10 governors.

“This is NUP’s support to the socio-economic agenda of the Duterte administration,” Garcia told reporters before the signing.

Asked  if the NUP would support the shift to federalism and reimposition of the death penalty being pushed by the incoming President, Garcia said: “All the legislative agenda but I think, per legislative agenda, it will be discussed also among partymates.”

PDP-Laban has also signed a coalition agreement with other political groups like the Nacionalista Party, the Nationalist People’s Coalition and the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrat. RAM/rga
