Did you know: National Artist Carlos Quirino’s 17th death anniv

TODAY, May 20, is the 17th death anniversary of National Artist for Historical Literature Carlos Quirino. In 1997, President Ramos created historical literature as a new category in the National Artist awards, with Quirino as the first recipient.

Quirino wrote “The Great Malayan,” one of the earliest biographies of Jose Rizal.

He was also the first Filipino correspondent for the United Press Institute. He died in 1999. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
