The Filipino voters, not a small group of the elite, should decide who the next President should be, Sen. Francis Escudero said on Saturday.
Escudero made the statement amid attempts by the Liberal Party to convince Sen. Grace Poe to join its efforts to thwart the victory of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and a possible dictatorship.
“An election should be decided by the people and their conscience. It should not be decided by a syndicate. No single person has the monopoly of good intentions for the country,” Escudero said.
He said he could not let the elite dictate the course of politics in the country.
“Let the people decide because that’s the essence of democracy,” he said.
“On Election Day, we are all equal. We all have one vote, whether you are a President, a senator, a tricycle driver, or driver,” he added.
He also said the elections were a chance for the people to make their voices heard.
“Monday’s election gives the people the opportunity to send a clear message to those in government that they demand a much better government that is willing to listen and address the needs of every Filipino,” he said.
“We are urging all voters to use their vote wisely in this election and to be an advocate for the change, which we as a nation both want and deserve,” he added.
